The 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death

On23 April 2016, Great Britain celebrated the 400th anniversary ofShakespeare’s death. The playwright’s date ofdeath isrecognized asInternational Day ofEnglish Language. The main events tocelebrate this day took place inLondon, where the great English poet and playwright spent his career, and inStratford-upon-Avon, where hewas born and died.

InLondon special screens showing short films based onShakespeare’s plays were placed along the bank ofthe River Thames from Westminster toTower Bridge. During the evening the president ofthe United States Barack Obama visited the recreated Globe Theatre. Hestood onthe exact replica stage ofthe one where Shakespeare’s plays took place.

The parade inmemory ofeverybody’s favourite genius oftheatre took place inthe charming mid-century town ofStratford-upon-Avon inCentral England. The participants ofthe parade carried agiant fake goose feather that symbolized the creative work oftheir famous fellow countryman.

The Royal Shakespeare theatre inStratford held ashow featuring the main stars ofBritish theatre, including such actors and actresses asJudi Dench (who starred asOphelia, Lady Macbeth and Juliet), Helen Mirren (Ophelia and Lady Macbeth), Ian McKellen (Hamlet, King Lear and Richard III) and Benedict Cumberbatch (currently starring asHamlet). The show was attended bymany famous British people including Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess ofCornwall.

Shakespeare has inspired, and will continue toinspire for many centuries. Hehas left apart ofhimself not just inhis own work, but inall pieces ofart that were based onhis stories.
